Buying a battery charger: what to look for

You choose an e-bike charger on three points: the charging voltage, the charging current and the plug. The charging voltage must match your battery: 42V for a 36V or 37V battery and 54.6V for a 48V battery. The charging current is usually 2A, because most Phylion and Joycube batteries are designed for it. And the plug must fit the charging port of your battery exactly. Most chargers are in stock and ready to ship, and you get a 12-month warranty.

Our range of battery chargers

Chargers with a DC plug (5.5 x 2.1): a round charging plug with an outer diameter of 5.5 mm and an inner diameter of 2.1 mm.
Chargers with an RCA plug: the 2-pin plug used on, among others, the Phylion XH370 and EBG370 batteries from Vogue, Veloci, Rivel and Talent.
Chargers with a 5-pin plug: round in plastic or metal, or trapezoid-shaped, for example for Accell and Joycube JCEB360 batteries.
Fast charger and 48V charger: a 4A fast charger and a 54.6V charger for 48V batteries. Check beforehand whether your battery is suitable.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a 36V or 37V battery need a 42V charger?

A 36V or 37V lithium-ion e-bike battery is fully charged at about 42V. That is why these batteries use a 42V charger. For the same reason, you charge a 48V battery with a 54.6V charger.

How do I know which plug my charger needs?

Look at the charging port of your battery or at the plug of your current charger, and use the Plug type filter to see the chargers that fit. For a DC plug, 5.5 is the outer diameter and 2.1 the inner diameter in millimetres. No calliper to hand? You can also estimate the outer diameter well with a ruler.

Can I use a fast charger instead of a 2A charger?

Not always. Many 36V e-bike batteries, such as those from Phylion and Joycube, are designed to be charged at 2A. A higher charging current can cause extra heat and faster wear, and therefore a shorter battery life.

How long does charging take with a 2A charger?

That depends on the capacity of the battery. A 13Ah battery needs about 6 to 7 hours on average to charge fully (13 Ah divided by 2 A is 6.5 hours).

Do these chargers work with a smart BMS?

Our chargers for Phylion and Joycube batteries work with both a standard BMS and a smart BMS. Not sure about another brand? Just ask us via WhatsApp or phone.

My charger does not work, what can I do?

First check whether the light on the charger is on and whether the plug makes good contact with the battery; an RCA plug in particular can wear loose over time. If the light stays green or the battery does not charge fully, the problem may be in the charger or in the battery.
